Heavy duty lathes of series HDS are in general designed for rough and finishing machining operations. For an optimized performance over the complete working range, the machines are provided with a rigid, heavily ripped cast iron bed. This guarantees an optimized stability and damping of the machine.

Based on the varying machining tasks, the bed design (conventional bed, 3-way or 4-way bed), steady rest type, turning unit in chisel or turret design, cutting power compensator, etc., are selected. High power on the faceplate and high feed rates are the basis for economical heavy duty machining of the work pieces with state of the art high performance tools.

For combined rough and finish machining of rolls the machines of the series HDS are used. The performance parameters of these machines enable to machine chilled cast iron rolls, cast steel rolls and forged steel rolls. A continuous high accuracy over the complete machine life cycle is achieved by using hardened steel guide ways and backlash free pre-stressed roller bearings.
